Draw a shape, choose a fabric, measure, cut, and slowly watch an idea become something real.

For a child, working with their hands is not simply about making an object. It means experimenting, making decisions, getting it wrong, correcting, and discovering that a project can grow step by step.

This is the principle behind many of Til Room's creative workshops for children and teens in Lugano.

Drawing on fabric is already designing.

From drawing to making

Even before learning to sew, a textile workshop teaches you to observe.

Which fabric is softer? Which holds a shape better? How do you take measurements? How can we turn an idea sketched on paper into something we can touch?

These are simple questions that introduce design thinking in a natural way.

Children learn by doing.

And when, at the end of the workshop, they can look at something they made themselves, the result has a completely different value from a ready-made object.

Hand skills, creativity and focus

Textile activities involve imagination and handwork at the same time.

Following a line, threading a needle, choosing colours and materials or assembling different elements requires attention, but also leaves plenty of room for personal creativity.

We are not looking for perfection.

A stitch that is not perfectly straight, or a shape slightly different from the one imagined, can become part of the project.

Learning that a mistake can be corrected or transformed is probably one of the most interesting lessons of creative work.

Mini Stylist and other workshops in Lugano

Among Til Room activities for younger participants is Mini Stylist, a path in which children and teens can approach fashion and design through fabrics, colours and small projects.

Other activities let them make puppets and textile objects, trying different techniques according to age. You will find an overview in the Create section and, for a more mindful approach to materials, in the article on sustainable fashion.

The aim is not to turn every participant into a little tailor.

It is to offer a space where they can imagine and build something with their own hands.

Why choose a creative workshop

A workshop can be interesting for a child curious about fashion and drawing, and also for anyone who simply loves making things.

It can be:

  • a different after-school activity;
  • a first contact with sewing and fabrics;
  • a space to develop a personal project;
  • a creative moment to share with other children;
  • a chance to step away from screens for a few hours.

Every child arrives with different skills and interests. The beauty of the workshop is that each person can find their own way to take part.
